In their own words:
In 2021 and 2022 I had the honour of organising the Home Composed Song Contest and this year I am delighted to be returning as a participant.
‘Why do we have to pretend’ was written in two sessions, which spanned a gap of 17 years! I composed the music in 2006, and I have been trying to write lyrics for the song ever since, but nothing seemed to quite fit. Then, about two months ago – out of nowhere – I sat down and wrote the lyrics in one sitting, which is very rare for me. After that the arrangement fell into place very quickly, and I had fun making it as poppy as is possible! I hope it will get you tapping your toes!
This song is dedicated to the memory of my friend Liam Jarnecki, who was a big fan of the Home Composed Song Contest and supported me on my journey in this competition for many years. He didn’t get to hear the song, but I think he would have approved. He would definitely have smiled at the many musical references he would have recognised!
Lyrics:
I don’t know what I should do
I’ve put my whole life on hold cos of you
I’ve been waiting in line, am I wasting my time?
While you’re out on your next rendezvous.
Are you keeping me in reserve?
Well If you are, then you’ve got quite a nerve
You assume that I’ll wait
Well at least let me state
That is something that I do not deserve!
I wish that we could be lovers
I am not sure that we can be friends
While you’re keeping me waiting
I know you are dating
and I wish that this circus would end
I am transfixed by your beauty
And I am bewitched by your smile
But I know that you know,
I’d be good for your soul
So why do we have to pretend?
You’re driving me, driving me,
Right round the bend
But if I meditate then I can transcend
And rise above the things that you do
Things you’re putting me through
So hard for you to defend
I wish that we could be lovers
I am am not sure that we can be friends
While you’re keeping me waiting
I know you are dating
and I wish that this circus would end
I am transfixed by your beauty
and I am bewitched by your smile
But I know that you know,
I’d be good for your soul
So why do we have to pretend?
I don’t know what I should do
I’ve put my whole life on hold cos of you
I’ve been waiting in line, am I wasting my time?
While you’re out on your next rendezvous
I wish that we could be lovers
I am not sure that we can be friends
While you’re keeping me waiting
I know you are dating
and I wish that this circus would end
I am transfixed by your beauty
And I am bewitched by your smile
But I know that you know,
I’d be good for your soul
So why do we have to pretend?
Yes I know that you know,
I’d be good for your soul
So why do we
(Why do we)
Why do we have to pretend?
