2. FRANCE: Serge Fourcade – Screed of ‘kin chestnuts

“Screed of ‘kin chestnuts”
Performed by: Serge Fourcade
Music by: Serge Fourcade
Lyrics by: Serge Fourcade

In their own words:

It’s the second time I take part and that time I sing, play and act in the music video so it didn’t cost much. As a civil servant, I’m at school this year in Nantes, Western France, yet aged 49 when the show will be broadcast. The song was inspired by the remembrance of an exhibition of diamonds in the National Museum of Natural History of Paris in 2001 and chain digressions from that subject. Black humour – and black is a colour commonly used to dye for the benefit of one’s hair — may occur now and then.

Lyrics:

Never pick them dyed, never pick them,
Never pick them dyed.
Never pick them dyed, never pick them—

A cheese in pyjamas,
A dark jerk of yore, cleaned himself off
The world he ruled before,
Stared at his gems, then he mourned:
“Nevermore, nevermore!”
And stained his giant crystal, his twin
Crystal, his pride; therefore,
Youngsters, despise vain tinselly rocks galore.

Never pick them dyed, never pick them,
Never pick them dyed.
Never pick them dyed—

[Instrumental interlude.]

Never pick them dyed, never pick them,
Never pick them dyed.
Never pick them dyed, never pick them—

Perceive that fruit of gore
As waste, some dazzling kind of eyesore,
Since guys, slowly dying,
Drop like a decaying spore.
Stan said he’d get the stone
Himself at the store near the drear shore;
Planes flew adverts above
And the Prime Minister resigned the whole chore.

Never pick them dyed, never pick them,
Never pick them dyed.
Never pick them dyed, never pick them,
Never pick them dyed.
Never pick them dyed, never pick them,
Never pick them dyed.
