17. UNITED KINGDOM 5: Cellphone – Watch Out for the Butterflies

“Watch Out for the Butterflies”
Performed by: Cellphone
Music by: Jim Brook
Lyrics by: Jim Brook

In their own words:

Hi. I’m Jim Brook from London and this is the 10th year in succession that I have participated in the HCSC.  I enter under the name Cellphone because, for a while, I submitted songs that I had recorded “live” onto my mobile. The top of the HCSC leaderboard has eluded me so far but I live in hope!

My song this year, Watch Out for the Butterflies, is dedicated to all those who feel they haven’t been living their best life, but who are determined to transform themselves into something strong, independent and beautiful. The music came first, as it generally does for me, with the lyrics kindly suggesting themselves afterwards. Most of the music was performed on my trusty acoustic guitar, with a little bit of accompaniment courtesy of GarageBand’s array of instruments.

I look forward to hearing the other songs in this year’s HCSC and wish all the entrants the very best of luck.

Lyrics:

Watch out for the Butterflies – we’re beginning to sharpen our claws.
Watch out for the Butterflies – smashing through ceilings and knocking down doors.
Watch out for the Butterflies…
(We’re coming to get ya.)

Watch out for the Butterflies – we’re beginning to bare our teeth.
Watch out for the Butterflies – delicate creatures with steel beneath.
Watch out for the Butterflies…
(This is our time now.)

Come on now, be strong now.
It’s a big world and you’ve gotta belong now.
Come on now, let’s dance and sing…
Cos Butterflies are on the wing.

Watch out for the Butterflies – we’re beginning to make some noise.
Watch out for the Butterflies – confident creatures, we’re nobody’s toys.
Watch out for the Butterflies…
(We’ve been down too long.)

Come on now, be strong now.
It’s a big world and you’ve gotta belong now.
Come on now, let’s dance and sing…
Cos Butterflies are on the wing.

In my first life, I was meek and mild.
I hid away in my cocoon and I didn’t dare try to fly.
But in my next life, I’ll run wild,
I’ll throw all caution to the wind
And I’ll laugh like a child,
An innocent child,
A carefree child.

Come on now, be strong now.
It’s a big world and you’ve gotta belong now.
Come on now, let’s dance and sing…
Cos Butterflies are on the wing.

Watch out for the Butterflies…
