    • This is how i'll vote... - carly in lund - 2006-07-08 10:43:42pm

rank them 1-10. no fancy organizational systems for me. just go with the gut. (my gut doesn't like things that don't fit with the original though, just so you know)

      • It doesn't? And you're telling me NOW?? :(( [R] - Yair - 2006-07-08 10:47:03pm
      • here's how I'll vote - rich - 2006-07-08 10:56:38pm

        1) begin drinking cafe au lait
        2) begin reading songs
        3) rank songs in order of how far away cafe au lait landed after shooting out of nostrils
        4) if all else fails, throw darts at laptop screen

      • Do you mean the original lyrics to the mp3 supplied, or the lyrics to the original original version of the song? - Harrow - 2006-07-08 10:57:42pm

Cos people have asked for English versions, alternate versions etc. and there's so many different versions of each song that it's hard to know what the original is often. My mp3s didn't quite fit with a few entries despite me having what I thought was the original.

        • ok ok, with whatever random mp3 Harrow puts up. sorry for the poor wording choice ;-) [R] - carly in lund - 2006-07-08 10:58:42pm
          • it's alright! And they're not random, they were all checked :)) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-08 11:01:09pm
    • How does one access the titles? All I see is Shiri and the Polish wizard :-) [R] - Jeremy In London - 2006-07-08 10:49:48pm
      • keep on clicking, Jeremy! [R] - carly in lund - 2006-07-08 10:50:15pm
      • Maybe you have a font problem, Alexander had the same with BFC, don't know how he solved it [R] - Yair - 2006-07-08 10:50:58pm
    • I'll do something similar. [R] - Frank - Go Wizard of Oz! - 2006-07-08 11:36:32pm

are we supposed to know German or Spanish to understand some entries?

      • It says correct on the list-page - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-09 12:03:08am

  • Indeed! This jury is gonna retire to think of a quotation and workprocedure! - Frank - Go Wizard of Oz! - 2006-07-09 12:08:14am

I think I'll first download all mp3s to make sure I have all the right versions from the start.
And then restore my Alex-inspired BFC scoresheet with points for fit, rhyme, theme and wit. Or something in that style :)

Looking forward to a fun couple of weeks!! :)

    • You nly have 1 week to vote :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-09 12:10:18am
      • I`ll get there. And I need a 5th column for originality! *stress!* :))) [R] - Frank - Go Wizard of Oz! - 2006-07-09 12:13:17am

    • All angel-chiaras have been split up between the semis as best as possible. - Harrow - 2006-07-09 12:18:38am

A song in this semi could still have 15 more versions, 2 in semi 2, 2 in semi 3 and 10 in the final.

If a song has 2 entries in one semi, it is guaranteed to have at least 4 entries based on it, unless people have asked for special dispensation because of holiday etc.

so read into that what you will :)

      • I know :)) [R] - Frank - Go Wizard of Oz! - 2006-07-09 12:23:44am
  • Gosh! Did our euroUSA write 2 of these....................???? :-))) [R] - kURt B - 2006-07-09 12:52:46am
    • No-one has 2 entries in the same semi :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-09 12:54:21am

  • Mp3s are downloaded, spreadsheet and categories are ready and I still have 6 days!! - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 1:31:47am

    • well done! :)) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-09 1:32:29am
    • My strategy is less time consuming ... - Thomas - who will fish me? - 2006-07-09 1:36:12am

... at first I kick out all entries I don't really like (there are some topic categories I immediately excluse, either because they bore me - and no, sex is not one of them - or because they strive too much for originality (remember, deep in my heart I'm a mainstream person...)- usually, this leaves me with a maximum of a dozen entries I concentrate on.

No points for certain aspects - ALC is a holistic experience for me.

      • I'd probably end up with a similar result that way as with what I'm doing now. - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 1:49:17am

I have categories for theme and originality. They carry less weight than fit and rhyme, but when I don't like a theme or think that the approach is too inspired by a previous entry, then it's unlikely that fit and wit alone will carry it to the top.

Hey, I'm a mathematician, we like our tables and sums :))

  • Your wish is my command, producer! [R] - Yair signing off - 2006-07-09 1:33:43am
  • signing off? it is time for having sex in van!!! - euroUSA - 2006-07-09 1:39:36am

hilarious wording, yet it doesn't fit the music, spread sheet will see some points deducted. same with Umladi meni porvavol, great yrics and i hate to deduct because it just doesn't resonate in my head musically!!!

    • If only we were all like Ryan, I'm sure his whole life is just one big musical in his head :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-09 1:40:50am
      • but not an experimental one!! :)) [R] - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 1:50:09am
      • no musical impossible!!! ;-)) [R] - euroUSA - 2006-07-09 1:57:39am
"If we all sleep with Svante..." ROFL! - LoboinMadrid - 2006-07-09 4:28:07am

  • Reading and rofling for ALC semi 1. Great stuff. - suomigirl - 2006-07-09 8:44:55am
    • hihi...I'm rofling here too... - javi - 2006-07-09 8:59:23am

      ...some brilliant stuff there!!! Genious!!...

      Are you ok sweetie?

      • Not. - suomigirl - 2006-07-09 9:11:15am

I wanted to escape the heat yesterday, and took a ferry to a nice island where I spent the day sunbathing. But when I was leaving I slipped and fell and sprained my ancle. Walking was difficult and I missed the last ferry back to mainland. So I've slept last night on beach under my towel, my ancle hurts like hell and it's practically impossible to move :(

        • Ouch, sorry to hear that :( [R] - Yair - 2006-07-09 9:15:30am
        • Oh.... - javi - 2006-07-09 9:19:47am

          sorry to hear that...:(((

          Hope it improves soon!

          Hugs.

        • Owww, painful! - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 11:05:03am

Ancles can hurt very much. And then with such a night as a result :((
Did you go see a doctor?

          • Haven't seen one yet, can't manage to get to doctor at this moment. [R] - suomigirl - 2006-07-09 11:08:35am
            • Will it be alright until you can? [R] - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 11:15:43am
              • It has to be, even walking to my kitchen is practically impossible. I really could use some help :( [R] - suomigirl - 2006-07-09 11:17:12am
                • Honey, why don't you call the hospital so they go pick you up? You can't be like that...:( [R] - javi - 2006-07-09 11:26:41am
                • Oh, not good :(( - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 11:27:34am

Can't you get the emergency doctor to come and have a look at it?
I used to do my ancles in quite often when I was young (and it still shows). That hurts like hell. Cooling it with ice may ease the pain somewhat?

                  • Cooling gel seems to help a bit [R] - suomigirl - 2006-07-09 11:36:55am
Good morning all! - Jelena - 2006-07-09 10:00:28am
  • Hey Jelena!!! - javi - 2006-07-09 10:06:47am

There are truly some gems there, I've already found the masterpiece of this semi!!! :)))

    • not really sure about any gems in this semi, most - Jelena - 2006-07-09 10:08:54am

entries are much worse compared to last years and there are even some htat i personally loath.

      :))

      • Gee, you're a tough judge! :))) - javi - 2006-07-09 10:14:12am

I think the overall level is very high thanks to some entries...but hey, we still have 2 more semis to come, so who knows what we will be reading next week and the following one!!! :)))

        • indeed. well, I do - Jelena - 2006-07-09 10:16:17am

know where humour ends and rudeness begins, unfortunately some people obviously dont.
          :))

          • Yeah well, about that... - javi - 2006-07-09 10:20:32am

it's all a matter of interpretation, I think. I don't think anyone was out to intentionally offend...but rudeness can have a target for this kind of contests, obviously...:))))

Don't you love it when you're singing along to an AL
Posted by Alexander-NL on 2006-07-09 12:25:16pm

but you're laughing so hard you can't really sing along anymore?? :o)) That's my fave part about the whole contest! :o)))

*whipes tears from eyes*

  • I agree - it's a warm flame in a cold eurovision year :-)) [R] - [PL] supporting AX-NL!!! still!! - 2006-07-09 12:29:04pm
I am reading the ALC entries and wooooow!! I think I have a fave already, eventhough i haven't read them all yet :))) - angelos - 2006-07-09 12:32:56pm
  • I've read them all once and have an early fav. But not saying anything :) - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 12:37:11pm

Nor on any of the others, hard as it may be :))

    • me either, my lips are sealed :)) But i have reserved my douze point already :)) [R] - angelos - 2006-07-09 12:40:18pm
    • I second all of these thoughts - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-09 12:45:12pm

Kind of bummed we have to wait so long for new ones, but first it's gonna be a tough job to hand out points for this group.

      • exactly :) i am selecting my top-15 now and will then make a top-10 out of it the coming days! tough job indeed!! :) [R] - angelos - 2006-07-09 12:50:52pm
      • Yes, it'll need a couple of more rounds of reading and singing - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 12:55:21pm

        and adjusting my spreadsheet :)

        • I haven't found 10 with a good match to the original when I sing along....mebe I'm being too picky ;-) [R] - Jeremy In London - 2006-07-09 12:56:53pm
          • You haven't? - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-09 12:57:45pm

            I've found worringly many! :o))

            • I'm very strict with matching the lyrics to the original "beat" :-)))) [R] - Jeremy In London - 2006-07-09 1:00:04pm
              • i am strict to :) and... - angelos - 2006-07-09 1:04:21pm

i value more an entry that has a good matching (and whose lyrics i like) than a funny/good one with lyrics that don't match at all with the melody :)

                • Exactly the same here ;-) [R] - Jeremy In London - 2006-07-09 1:05:50pm
          • no u aren't picky at all - angelos - 2006-07-09 12:59:37pm

seems like most of them don't match (at least not the syllables) at all to the original lyrics, unfortunately!

            • Guess *I* am not picky enough! ;o)) [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-09 1:00:12pm
              • I'm extremely picky when it comes to that, - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 1:13:07pm

but I had the impression that on general the fit was better than last year.
Then again, the real scrutinising hasn't started yet :))

          • I haven't gotten round to the singing along properly part for all.:) [R] - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 1:01:20pm
            • If one or two lines are not matching enough is fine, but not more than that (then it gets a minus from me) :P [R] - angelos - 2006-07-09 1:03:06pm
              • Same here....some have no resemblence whatsoever to the original :-) [R] - Jeremy In London - 2006-07-09 1:05:00pm
          • I think some people fitted to lyrics, others fitted to sound - Harrow - 2006-07-09 1:04:48pm

So even perfectly-matched syllable lyrics might be difficult to fit in. But there are some that do not fit yes. :)

2 sets of votes in so far, one from a participant and one which will be compiled with thers t make the non-participant vote.

            • That was extremely quick, to put it mildly :) [R] - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 1:10:01pm
              • The voter assures me they took their time, and dedicated sleeping time to reading and singing :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-09 1:11:28pm
                • Lol! Can't argue with that :)) [R] - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 1:13:59pm
  • Im a picky one, I hate almost every single entry :))) [R] - Jelena - 2006-07-09 1:04:43pm
    • lol Niiice! ;o)) [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-09 1:06:50pm
      • Seems Im turning into Frank, no ? :)))) [R] - Jelena - 2006-07-09 1:18:39pm
    • Heheheh...tough cookie ;-) [R] - Jeremy In London - 2006-07-09 1:07:23pm
      • thats me :)))) [R] - Jelena - 2006-07-09 1:14:05pm
    • indeed ... waste of time to read on it ! [R] - marco.To - 2006-07-09 1:30:42pm

Smiling you ? eh eh eh ... i don't wanna learn your way to smile, never.

Communicating with a twofaced creep who posted one of the most sick "jokes" ever on this MB is not something I care for.
I won't ignore your insults towards other MBers though, no chance.

Can someone explain to me the logic behind writing an entry in a language most of us don't speak or understand? - Jeremy In London - 2006-07-09 1:32:57pm

Just skim read the first entries for ALC and I have to say they are all good but 2 faves sprung out .....
Posted by juliejWHAMBAMBOOM!!!! on 2006-07-09 1:46:36pm

... immediately - and someone mentioned one this year very much in the style of one last year - and that is one of my faves this year as it was last!!!!

I am impressed so far!!!

I'm very, very angry...
Posted by Yair @work on 2006-07-09 2:06:24pm

...at one of the song lyricists.

Hillarious, intelligent, original but not too bizarre, actually made me like the song which I didn't previously like, and most of all, in perfect synch... Except one line, which, although has the correct number of syllables, does not fit the sentential stress. Such a line would be okay in any other song, but it's way beneath the standards of this one.

I'm tempted to punish it with a 10! (harsh, I know... But Thomas is a bad influence ;-) )

  • My veredict after reading (and listening to) Semi 1 - LoboinMadrid - 2006-07-09 2:13:03pm

    5-6 songs are very good
    5-6 more are ok

A semi with 12-15 songs would have been nicer
    :-)

    • Indeed it would, but would 6 semis be nicer too? :)) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-09 2:17:52pm
      • We'd start calling it Harrowifestivalen then :)) [R] - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 2:20:57pm
        • No you wouldn't, cos I wouldn't be doing it if there were 6 semis! :)) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-09 2:22:13pm
          • Then we'd call it Harromemorialfestivalen!! :)) [R] - Frank - Go Oz! - 2006-07-09 2:24:50pm

      • LOL, ALC would last 6 months then :) [R] - suomigirl - 2006-07-09 2:22:15pm
    • Tsk! You SO should read better my posts! - LoboinMadrid - 2006-07-09 2:33:01pm

12-15 songs I LIKE in each semi!
      :-P

      • ah ok! But only 6 can qualify, so it's good that you have a clear 6 in a way :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-09 2:35:29pm
  • are you thinking what I'm thinking? - rich - 2006-07-09 6:16:49pm

there is one song that, excepting for one repeating line, could get a 12 from me. Sadder still, that line could be replaced by a very simple alternative that fits perfectly with both the beat and the syllables (in fact, it's a half-rhyme to the original). So I am considerably angry as well.

A 2 point deduction is generous!

  • Haha. you're so picky sometimes ;-) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-09 6:55:06pm

I remember last year, when I was reading all this similar talk, I thought some of them was about my entry :-)

I've had quite a few ROFL's the last hour ;)

Well, sure, some of them were total stinkers (it's better to be honest) but at least all of them were entertaining in their own ways ;) And there were also, of course, loads of really funny and smart and great ones :) No clear favourite at the moment. And with many of them I'm a bit torn :) There were some that were just a bit over the top in rude-ness and/or porn-ness, but I still couldn't help myself enjoying them. And some will hve to be read some mroe times before I can totally "get" them I think. So no quick voting for me! :)

    - could they have been written by a 12 year-old? if yes, 0 points for you!

Obviously there are a couple that were rude but smart. Then again, the same can be said for Silvia Night, and you know how well she did ;)

... including some of them from categories I usually do not vote for ;).

6 clear favourites:

- Five are MB favourites and have been mentioned here before.

Nuff said ... ah, and I found a great link to a Plaza del Torro glossary! ALC is so instructive...

quite a few of them are really, really good IMO. A very promising start to ALC as I see it :)

  • I think so too!!!! :))) Not everyone agrees, though...but hey...tastes differ... [R] - javi - 2006-07-10 8:07:44am
    • I suppose I can see why some of the entries would be a bit controversial... - Joanna - 2006-07-10 8:17:04am

but I like them anyway! It's not like anyone intended anything bad with any of the entries, after all I am sure.

And hm, I am not so touchy when it comes to these things :)

      • I see one entry that can be controvertial - Yair @work - 2006-07-10 8:45:52am

But it all depends on who wrote it :)

        • oh, I see what you mean - Joanna - 2006-07-10 9:37:59am

"Hertz" could be controversial if it is written by a Hertz employee, "The Tasty Moussaka" can be controversial if it is written by someone that doesn't like Greek food, "No Gay Impossible" is controversial if it's written by someone straight...

          so you are right! :)

          • LOL!!! Not to mention if... - Yair @work - 2006-07-10 9:49:55am

"Gruppe fur dich" was written by Julie!

And I just discovered a strike of genius I had formerly overlooked ... - Thomas ...singing on speed - 2006-07-09 11:06:43pm

... a very subdued entry which got me in tears now that I've sung it.

There is some incredibly good stuff in there.

  • Intrigued! I hope you're gonna give me the usual commentary.. the submissions so far have been rather ordinary :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-09 11:08:06pm

  • Reading ALC entries now...
Posted by Joanna on 2006-07-10 8:03:48am

quite a few of them are really, really good IMO. A very promising start to ALC as I see it :)

So well done everyone that has an entry in semi 1! I think reading your entries cured my hangover a bit :)

    I think so too!!!!

Re: The themes in ALC discussion
Posted by Yair @work on 2006-07-10 2:12:23pm

I agree with what some said below. Some themes are getting tired, especially ESC failures. A song would have to be extremely innovative and intelligent in this theme for me to like it rather than saying "oh no, not another song about failure...". Such was "My unbearable scream" last year.

Same about the food theme - and yet, there is one food-related song in this semi that does it for me. Innovative, refreshing, contains words that resemble the original in a surprising and hillarious way... And actually makes me hungry.

I've been humming it all day :)

  • Yair, I think we could say the same about ESC itself! - Richard_CT - 2006-07-10 2:34:30pm

And BTW, I disagree with your characterization of "My Unbearable Scream" as a song about failure, since it doesn't even mention ESC or Glennis.

    • I agree :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-10 2:44:24pm
      • And I doubt that anyone next year will avoid the "tired" themes because one voter won't like them! [R] - Ann O'Namus - 2006-07-10 2:46:30pm
        • Well, I know that I'll try not to do a certain theme anymore next year... [R] - [PL] supporting AX-NL!!! still!! - 2006-07-10 3:00:18pm
    • ... and that's exactly the genius part of it! [R] - Yair @work - 2006-07-10 3:33:28pm
  • I don't think failures are problematic as a theme. Most failure entries aren't simply of a very high standard. - Timoteus - 2006-07-10 2:48:30pm

Failure is the most obvious theme and if a participant has little originality in selecting the theme, he/she tends to have little originality in how to handle the theme as well. The few exceptions score reasonably well.

    • I feel basically the same. - Frank - 2006-07-10 2:55:16pm

If have some basic knock-out criteria.
If it doesn't fit the melody, it goes out, no matter how funny it is. If it is too close to the original, it goes out and if the handling isn't original, it goes out too.
The theme as such doesn't play a major role. I prefer a well-done well-flowing old theme, to a badly constructed new one.

      • How about an AALC next year? - Richard_CT - 2006-07-10 2:59:04pm

I emailed every ESC 2006 artist who had an address on their website, and these 2 were the only ones to reply. Fabrizio's manager said he'd do it if I contacted him after ESC, but after his result I was too scared to, and Ich Troje's manager told me they were on a promotour but would try their best.

... I got exactly 10 worthy of points (even though No. 10 is a boarderline case).

The good ones are great, though, so it's a much better than expected semi 1 and better than last year's semi 1 and 2.

There is just one semi song from last year's selection I still rate higher than the top 6 in this year's semi 1 ... or did I turn gentle with age?

    • you are probably right quality wise - it's just 11 0's is quite a lot!!! lol [R] - Niall@work! - 2006-07-10 6:39:13pm

        • my BFC and ALC system differs slightly ..... - Niall@work! - 2006-07-10 6:50:03pm

for ALC i have no set guidlines or categories where my votes go

You will score points if you

          1) make me laugh
          2) make sense
          3) be clever
          4) go well enough with the tune I am humming in my head while reading it

          You will lose marks if

          1) it's boring
          2) it goes over old ground/ reminds me of a past entry
          3) loses the tempo or idea the writer is trying to get acess
          4) is too silly or doesn't make sense

You will score 0 if it falls down in 3 Of the 4 areas above

          Marks out of 60.

...is it really diofficult to find a 12 pointer?!

I have about 10 songs that I think are worthy to be in my top 10, so that's no problem, but even though many of them are really good, none of them really stands out as a clear 12 pointer...There's lots of songs I would want to give 10 and 8 to though ;)
I guess Julie was right when she said this just sin't the semi where the winner will come from :)

  • I agree, Jonas...my 12 was kind of 12-by-default...the best, but not, you know, fantastic [R] - carly in lund - 2006-07-10 6:43:38pm
  • I would have agreed on Sunday but I no longer do. There is an obvious 12-pointer after all, it just needed to grow first [R] - Timoteus - 2006-07-10 6:45:57pm
    • please enlighten me ;-)) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-10 6:54:02pm

  • It all depends, I guess. - Frank - 2006-07-10 6:47:31pm

I have a few that I'll gladly give my 12 to in this semi, but whether they will still get it in the final all remains to be seen, depending on what is still to come.

I suppose that none of the 89 jurors thought of Rock Me as a surefire winner, until they heard the others :)

  • i found my 12pointer very very easy :)) Harrow knows which one I mean ;)) hehe [R] - angelos - 2006-07-10 7:56:14pm
    • I do indeed :)) That's what I love best about ALC, I read the entries first, and I get to know the winner first :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-10 8:00:10pm
      • Sure, rub it in! [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-10 8:42:19pm

ALC, how do you rate entries that are "objectively speaking" good but in practice mainly fail to make you laugh?
Posted by Timoteus on 2006-07-10 7:15:30pm

There's one entry in particular that is written technically well and in a humorous manner but in reality it's not as funny as it pretends to be. The text has its moments but mostly it tries to be funny so desperately that it's blatant and seems almost engineered. Yet the merits of the text can't be denied. It's currently struggling to get any points from me in the semi but I feel bad about having to rate it far lower than some "objectively speaking worse" entries. :|

Oh, and by the way, if you think you know which text I'm talking about, leave it. You're probably wrong.

  • if it doesn't make you laugh, and that's what it's aiming for, it failed, imo [R] - carly in lund - 2006-07-10 7:16:34pm
    • I often prefer those who make me smile instead of those who make me laugh :-) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-10 7:19:48pm
      • smile, laugh, whatever ;-) [R] - carly in lund - 2006-07-10 7:23:08pm
  • Haha. I have the same problem with one of them... - Jonas - 2006-07-10 7:18:15pm

...I know it's *supposed* to be funny, and it's very well written. Smart and clever, and the rhymes are all good and that... but it fails to make me enjoy it for some reason.

Although, the song I think I'll give my 12 pointer isn't exactly either a song that makes me laugh out loud, but one which is very smart and clever, and funny in a more hidden and rather non-obvious way.

  • That's where my categories come in :) - Frank - 2006-07-10 7:25:59pm

"Funny" is but one of my categories and if it scores well in most others, which an entry like the one that you are describing would, then it's bound to do well in my final list.

I have the opposite problem, actually. There is an entry, with an original theme and very funny, but it fails to fit the melody constantly. It probably won't score.

  • One stands out for me, and it's not about food at all, nor is it in a foreign lingo ;-) [R] - Jeremy In London - 2006-07-10 7:50:43pm

"1 point: Song No. 5 "Who Said I Would Win?" ... a worne out story, but told with considerable charms.

2 points: Song No. 14 "Such attire" ... making the best of a bad song and situation

3 points: Song No. 20: "Y asì (Coma La Chica) ... works wonders with the music, a real summery appetizer!

4 points: Song No. 18 "Rent Me Tonight" ... professional piece of calculated fun, but not as much as the other one, imho

5 points: Song No. 11 "Throwing The Fish" ... what a hilariously absurd imagery it provokes - and what a bittersweet story!

6 points: Song No. 12 "This Song Is Shite" ... another one I love to watch my inner mind's movie to. Rougher and wittier than its hyped contender - the kind of trash that fits the Agurbash

7 points: Song No. 3 "My Unbearable Scream" ... did nothing for me when reading it but shot to the heights of irresistible weirdness when I imagined Glennis' actually singing it

8 points: Song No. 22 "Whale Girl" ... ok, it IS predictable, it just HAD to be written, but so what ... it's BIG fun! A hit!

10 points: Song No. 8 "Bagel" ... another hoot, but with the extra of a nice build. Just like a true poem!

12 points: Song No. 9 "What Kind of Ban" ... a masterpiece of discreet humour. All I wanted to express with "Greece Is The One" and failed. In word-by-word-to-note perfection. Adorable!!! Got no idea who wrote it(certainly not Nelly), but whoever it is, I will be madly in love with her/him

              • who?? :) [R] - Niall@work! - 2006-07-11 1:21:16pm
  • I will listen/read my 12 pointer again (which gets better with each reading) and go to sleep. Good night! [R] - Yair - 2006-07-10 11:33:30pm
    • Mine too! Wonder if it's the same :-))) [R] - Jeremy In London - 2006-07-10 11:35:51pm
    • I guess my 12 pointer is either the same or you wrote it ... as usual. [R] - Thomas ...back & forth & a kiss - 2006-07-11 12:29:17am
  • I'm happy with my top 10 :) - Jortsu - 2006-07-10 11:33:53pm

Though I had to leave 2 songs out that would have gotten points also. Anyway, my points this year don't count as much as last year, so...
But I really had fun, especially singing, that's for sure. Can't wait for second semi :)

  • Joy! [R] - [PL] supporting AX-NL!!! still!! - 2006-07-10 11:35:18pm

Oh no! I just found a fatal flaw in my 12-pointer in Semi1...

... Harrow, can we revise our votes?

  • Erm... no, sorry [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-11 5:41:37pm
    • OK. I'll just have to revise my votes if this one makes it to the final. [R] - Richard_CT - 2006-07-11 5:45:43pm
  • A missing syllable? A false rhyme? A line that doesn't settle with the main story line? Entirely not in English? [R] - Yair - 2006-07-11 5:49:29pm
    • None of the above. [R] - Richard_CT - 2006-07-11 5:50:33pm

          • sociology isn't useless! - rich - 2006-07-11 7:39:39pm

it's "special" ... and needs individual attention ... and it's just developing at a different rate than the "real" sciences.

            I hope that settles that.

            • The world will need a whole lot more sociologists (and anthropologists) when... - Richard_CT - 2006-07-11 7:45:23pm

I hope you're not implying that sociologists are a good source of natural gas!

I thought we psychologists had cornered that market.

                • You have! But even so... - Richard_CT - 2006-07-11 8:02:42pm

... when the sh*t hits the global warming fan. social scientists in general will be in demand.

                  • that's be nice - rich - 2006-07-11 8:13:03pm

but what makes you think that we have sidestepped the technological imperative? As soon as the fan turns brown, we'll build a new fan.

If social science is to succeed in ushering in large scale change in social organization, it needs to overcome its chief flaw: the inability to produce *actionable* principles for change and the practitioners necessary to facilitate these changes. Otherwise, social science will never be able to compete with the pure technologists in the real world ;)

                  • she has plenty of reason to talk about transferability - rich - 2006-07-11 8:23:31pm

generalizability would be a silly thing to talk about with a small number of cases ;)

"transferability" is one of the few valid bullet points in her dogma. FYI, I saw her in a coffee shop yesterday.

        • No, not at all. It can mean anything! - Frank - 2006-07-12 2:20:38pm

Harrow said that last night 9 people still had to vote. He says so after I voted too.

          That either means
          a) I'm not in this semi
          b) I'm in this semi and Harrow miscalculated again

Marianne says Nope, 8. That can mean
          a) she is in this semi and just voted
          b) she is not in this semi, but thinks I am

          Everything is possible!!

          • I love your reasoning... :)))) [R] - suomigirl - 2006-07-12 2:24:50pm
          • LOL! Or she's saying... - Yair @work - 2006-07-12 2:29:40pm

            c) she is not in this semi, but Harrow always miscalculates, might as well correct him!

  • More trivia! - Frank - 2006-07-12 5:36:19pm

More than half the songs (14) are from 2006. There are 4 from 2004, two from 2005 and 1995 and one each from 2005, 2001, 1996, 1984 and 1982 :)

Posted by Jeremy on 2006-07-13 12:44:46pm

Eeeek...time to lower the qualification barrier :-(

  • I've had like 8 'direct' candidates but only one or two of them I really really like :-) [R] - [PL] supporting AX-NL!!! still!! - 2006-07-13 12:46:46pm
  • There are about 7 songs that i like but only 2 made me laugh a lot - orionas - 2006-07-13 12:51:42pm

so i gave them the highest points...The music matching the lyrics is not so important...I always find a way to fit in the lyrics...Except if the lyrics are way too far from the music.Otherwise i'm not too severe when it comes to lyrics fitting the music. After all i think it's all about fun (we are not lyricists) so the funny ones get votes from me...

    • The music matching the lyrics IS the most important. [R] - Frank - 2006-07-13 12:53:44pm
      • Same here, it take a lot of hard work to match the lyrics (while trying to make sense) with the rhythm of the original.. - Jeremy - 2006-07-13 12:56:57pm

and that's where my points went. There are plenty of well written and funny entries but with no connection whatsoever with the original, no matter how many times I changed the syllables

        • Indeed, just being funny is not what ALC is about. [R] - Frank - 2006-07-13 12:59:21pm
        • I quite like imagining the actual singers singing the new lyrics. That gave me an extra giggle for some of them. :-))) [R] - Luke - 2006-07-13 1:05:58pm
          • Yes, I tend to do that too, if applicable. :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-13 1:08:26pm
            • Oh yes, Car Ola singing Inflatable :))) [R] - suomigirl - 2006-07-13 1:17:29pm
  • Well I had 9 definites and agonised over the final placing - - David in Hull - 2006-07-13 7:09:43pm

I think the standard was high - so don't understand the criticism raised!

True, several entries did not fit to the original lyrics (I was guilty of this last year, as a novice). But I have tried harder this year - but not convinced I totally succeeded.

Only one song I considered to be poor - but that was based on my loathing of the subject more than anything else, probably!

I'm facing an opposite problem to that Jeremy expressed below...
Posted by Yair on 2006-07-13 5:07:53pm

Maybe there aren't 10 songs worth points in this semi, but there are 3 masterpieces I can't see myself not voting for in the final.

If the standard remains in the next two semis, it means 3x3=9 songs I must give points to in the final, before reading the direct final entries.

Since surely at least some of the direct finalists have entered something as good or better than last year, this will leave several 10/10 masterpieces without points from me at all :(

  • Hey....let me have that problem when we get to it. So far I don't see it happening :-))) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-13 5:09:40pm
  • Aww, I barely found my top 10 ! [R] - Jelena - 2006-07-13 5:15:58pm

How do you feel when you see people commenting on an ALC entry and
Posted by orionas on 2006-07-13 5:23:27pm

    • Oh, I would never take em personally. The only thing I *do* take personally is blantant and repeated cheating :-/ [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-13 5:32:59pm
      • of course Jeremy!! [R] - angelos - 2006-07-13 5:43:38pm

  • either way good or bad it's not important .....I'd be just glad they liked it enough to comment on it :) [R] - Niall@work! - 2006-07-13 5:32:48pm
  • Comments can be misleading - Yair - 2006-07-13 5:38:02pm

Last year hardly anyone talked about Chernobyl (I think only Joanna, Jeremy and Alp said something), so I expected it to qualify, but not get very far.

Dwarfs, however, was talked positively by many, so I was sure it would be my highest ranked entry - but ended up with almost half the points of Chernobyl.

    • Last years voting was just too funny....all I was interested in was the 1-10 points, the 12 being obvious :-))) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-13 5:39:47pm
      • <blushing> [R] - Yair - 2006-07-13 5:40:53pm

  • This year, I'm trying not to pay attention too much... - Richard_CT - 2006-07-13 6:10:49pm

... as last year I was sure that "I Come From Canada" would get to the final, and only ended up being disappointed.

This year, I've decided to lower my expectations and am hoping for nul point-ers!

    • This year, I was full of hope and excitement ... - Thomas ... ALC makes me go mmmh! - 2006-07-13 6:13:17pm

... until semi 1 was published. Now I'm just excited ;)

      • I've already decided that next year I'm aiming for "obscure and confusing...." [R] - Richard_CT - 2006-07-13 6:14:26pm
    • It did do well with the juries from the two americas! :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-13 6:24:57pm
      • True, and I did get one douze... - Richard_CT - 2006-07-13 6:30:32pm

...albeit from a MB'er who'd lick Celine's boots if she'd just stood in a cowpat.

(Sorry, Alex.... I'm still grateful for the douze... honest!)

        • ROFL! Can we have pics of that? :)) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-13 6:33:57pm
    • Well, it made me laugh! - Pete D - 2006-07-13 6:39:02pm

& I found it v satisfying last year when Niall (I think it was him...) said how much he liked my entry, even though it didn't qualify either. :)

      • I voted for it :)) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-13 6:52:33pm

So... what will ALC Semi 2 bring us?

Title:

I'm guessing more barbies, more food, maybe the odd MB-inside joke and lots of other, unspeakable topics :-)

  • I bet 2 other Tornero's for sure!! - orionas - 2006-07-14 5:24:44pm

it seems Tornero is probably the hit of this ALC as far as participations are concerned (we'll see about the results)

  • I'm curious about this new dolls theme - Yair - 2006-07-14 5:25:29pm

There are 4 (!!) songs in Semi 1 alone about or mentioning dolls, more than songs about food or songs about failure.

A new trend or luck of draw? We'll know better tomorrow night, I guess.

  • Maybe some more recipes. That moussaka was yummy, but I want a wider variety :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-14 5:39:06pm
    • And this one was without beef - I hope the next recipe will follow trend :)) [R] - Yair - 2006-07-14 5:45:14pm
  • Another 26 hours .... tap tap tap - Frank - 2006-07-14 7:59:51pm
    • That's exactly one hour to read and analyze each song from Semi 1 (except yours). Get to work! :) [R] - Yair - 2006-07-14 8:02:56pm
      • And if you don't have an entry, you're allowed to skip one [R] - Yair - 2006-07-14 8:07:05pm
        • Will there be a quiz afterwards? :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-14 8:12:18pm
          • Of course! - Yair - 2006-07-14 9:43:45pm

            Here's one of the questions:

Your rented Yugo is stuck outside a bar and you need to take a piss. Gay zombies are chasing you, and you must cross the street and enter the bar (which is serving a tasty moussaka tonight). To your right there's an ugly girl on speed having sex in a van with her inflatable boyfriend. What will you do to distract the zombies?
            1) Scare the zombies with your nose
            2) Stab them with your banderilla
            3) Send them to sleep with Svante
            4) Confuse them with Sanomian
            5) Confuse them even more with German

            • ROFL!! :)) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-14 9:49:01pm
Yay the last jury's votes are in! Still half an hour left if the 2 non-participants left or anyone else wants to vote :) - Harrow - 2006-07-15 11:31:30am
  • Will it still be possible to vote in the final if I don't vote in this semi? - Sild - 2006-07-15 12:07:50pm

To be honest, there's quite a load of nonsense in this one...

    • Define "nonsense"! ;) [R] - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-15 12:09:02pm
      • 1 a : words or language having no meaning or conveying no intelligible ideas b (1) : language, conduct, or an idea... - Timoteus - 2006-07-15 12:11:34pm

...that is absurd or contrary to good sense (2) : an instance of absurd action
2 a : things of no importance or value : TRIFLES b : affected or impudent conduct <took no nonsense from subordinates>
3 : genetic information consisting of one or more codons that do not code for any amino acid and usually cause termination of the molecular chain in protein synthesis

        • i knew about third definition. [R] - euroUSA - 2006-07-15 12:13:11pm
        • I just knew ... 1 and 2 are two potential ALC success factors! [R] - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-15 12:16:44pm
    • seriously, what do people expect? profound, moving, heart touching lyrics? by definition ALC is supposed to put smile - euroUSA - 2006-07-15 12:22:12pm

one one's face, and to be honest, that is what i expect. if it is nice enough to make me smile, it will get my points.

      • ... and there have been plenty of reasons to smile so far! [R] - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-15 12:23:02pm
        • same here!!! :-) [R] - euroUSA - 2006-07-15 12:24:02pm
      • That's what i think too!! ALC has to do with fun! [R] - orionas - 2006-07-15 12:26:22pm
      • Exactly, but many of the above mentioned lacks just that, imo - Sild - 2006-07-15 12:34:28pm

There are some true masterpieces, but certainly not all.

        • Well, thank God not all of them are masterpieces ... it was already tough enough to decide where my points went. - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-15 12:38:14pm

Now honest, what did you expect? 90 masterpieces?

And why don't you vote for those true masterpieces to make sure they will go to the final?

It's not easy to write a great ALC entry, and there are only very few in that semi which seem rushed and just for the sake of participating.

Not all of us are Yairs and Franks, though.

          • I heartily agree - my song is one of the cheapest and it still took me a lot of thought! LOL :-))) [R] - Luke - but you can call me Vlad - 2006-07-15 1:04:15pm
            • After the hour I put into Estonian Cowgirl - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-15 1:22:14pm

Now I've been at it for *days*...

I'm pretty confident I won't end last, but the final is looking like Mission: Impossible 4! :P

              • Days? Oh dear... - javi - 2006-07-15 1:30:51pm

I know I'm not going to make the final...I just hope my placing won't be too embarrassing...:))))))

            • The enrty that took me the longest was the one that took me about 10 hours - orionas - 2006-07-15 1:25:01pm

And in these 10 hours i also watched tv, surfed the internet and posted here in the MB...I must say it wasn't so difficult to make an ALC entry...
But the results will tell about the quality of course

              • That's what I thought last year ... ;) [R] - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-15 1:28:45pm
                • That's what i thought in 2004! ;o)) [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-15 1:29:43pm
                • But i had a certain pattern to make an ALC entry...I wasn't writing random things - orionas - 2006-07-15 1:31:31pm

I knew what i wanted and what i needed so as to be satisfied with the outcome. And this is what really matters to me.The fact that i really liked my entry/entries it was fun making them and i would consider myself successful if someone read them and laughed! That is all i want...so i don't have any problems with someone judging ALC entries...

                  • I have to say this year I still love singing my stuff ... so it was definitely worth it! ;) [R] - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-15 1:35:53pm
                  • Yes, that's what I was aiming for too... - javi - 2006-07-15 1:37:06pm

...having a bit of fun and making others laugh if possible. But I don't appreciate much the way some people " judge" the entries so harshly without even trying to writing any themselves and not giving us any credit for doing it ourselves. It's that simple, really.

                    • What does one know about whether judgers have tried writing any themselves? - Sild - 2006-07-15 1:48:39pm

Besides, does one have to write a Eurovision song to judge one? Does one have to write a novel to be able to decide if other novels are good or bad? Does one have to play football to enjoy or not enjoy watching a football match?

                      • The big difference is - Yair - 2006-07-15 2:44:59pm

that you pay for ESC (through your taxes or buying CD) and for the books you buy.

ALC is free, amateur and completely voluntary.

                      • I don't know if you did... - javi - 2006-07-15 3:05:24pm

...if so, good for you. But next time, measure your words more carefully when talking about the work of your fellow mb'ers. You came upon us too harsh and a little rude, imo.

                        • Sure, from now on I'll be all hugs and kisses. [R] - Sild - 2006-07-15 3:35:00pm
                          • Have it your way, Sild... - javi - 2006-07-15 3:42:12pm

I didn't say you *are* rude, only the way you expressed yourself was. But if insist on being cynical about this, well, there's not much I can do about it. Judge as much as you want, the way you want and have a blast doing it, it must be real fun making fun of others in your world.

                            • Seriously - Sild - 2006-07-15 3:56:56pm

How come I'm rude and only out to cause trouble when having a sincere question, while regulars of years and years are free to criticize ALC, BFC or any other contest's entries until they're faces turn blue? As far as I remember, some of my hardest critics in this thread were quite verbal in expressing their dissatisfaction with certain BFC entries, without being hunted down for that reason.

If I offended someone, that was certainly not my intention and I am sorry, but I do believe in being honest. Some of the entries are good, some are not good, and if I think so, I think it's only fair I'm allowed to express my views without being lynched.

                              • Ok..... - javi - 2006-07-15 4:03:33pm

Once again, I didn't say you're rude. As for criticism of other entries in previous contests, that's not my way and I'd never do it.

You are free to express to opinions, of course, and to honest. But I only asked you to be more careful when doing it and not be so harsh, is it so hard to undesrtand?

And now, in true Silvia style:

                                *****Hugs and kisses, Sild!!! *****

                                *storms off*

        • Well, next time make sure you participate and give us a true masterpiece. [R] - javi - 2006-07-15 12:51:18pm
          • That's what I told myself last year ... and you will be surprised how it turned out! ;) [R] - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-15 1:16:06pm
            • LOL!! who knows, who knows...All I'm aiming for ,though, is not getting a big fat zero!!! :))) [R] - javi - 2006-07-15 1:19:17pm
              • Needless to say, I didn't spot you yet ... - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-15 1:21:27pm

... it's more difficult than ever with so many entries and not knowing whether that someone is in that semi.

                • I haven't spotted you either... - javi - 2006-07-15 1:27:40pm

...but Harrow has some of my guesses...he must be rofl'ing as we speak!!! As for me, I'm saying nothing...:)))

                  • Well, I might not have been "in" yet ... - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-15 1:29:31pm

                    ... then again ...

                    • hehe...mysterious Thomas...:))) Who knows??? :))) [R] - javi - 2006-07-15 1:33:47pm
                      • Me! :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-15 1:40:38pm
    • Hmm, managed to miss the deadline anyway... - Sild - 2006-07-15 12:57:24pm

And if I had any idea how touchy you all were on the subject, I would have kept my virgin eyes far away.

      • I don't think we were touchy ... I just think you were a little rude. [R] - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-15 1:03:11pm
        • How? By judging lyrics written for judging? [R] - Sild - 2006-07-15 1:05:09pm
          • Well, if you call that judging ... nevermind. [R] - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-15 1:09:56pm
      • Not touchy, but we take time to do our best and deserve a minimum credit for that. [R] - javi - 2006-07-15 1:11:42pm
      • Well we weren't really toucht, but I didn't think you were rude either - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-15 1:14:48pm

But only 6 of these will qualify and I do think it's important that you reward the masterpieces you've seen.

But Yair and I have experience with this... Remember Yair? "I can't vote, there are only 4 or 5 hot ones!" :P

        • Hmm ... 1, 2 or 3 points do not necessarily mean I have to be mesmerized! [R] - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-15 1:17:53pm
    • Poor Sild, I'm sure he never had the intention to step on anyone's toes! - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-15 3:41:29pm

In a way, it's also a compliment, because nonsense usually scores extremely well at ALC... I know I've actually *tried* to write nonsense, since a well-balanced story like Estonian Cowgirl obviously didn't exactly get the response I expected! :P

And yes I plan to say this till it gets recognised! :P

  • I just read that tonight we'll only see the Semi II entries and *not* the Semi I qualifiers. Bummer - Jeremy - 2006-07-15 2:39:04pm
    • hehe, me,I found the recipe for cherry sauce!!! :)))) [R] - Jelena - 2006-07-15 2:43:53pm
      • You go and pick cherries and stamp on them with your little foot? :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-15 2:49:02pm
        • LOL Frank, are you aware how cute sounded what you've said ? :)))) [R] - Jelena - 2006-07-15 2:51:24pm
          • hehe :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-15 3:27:16pm
    • I know, I'm really curious as to how semi 1 has ended! - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-15 2:46:13pm

But we're going to have to be patient... once more... :o))

But yup, semi 2 should be fun! :o)) Can't wait! :o))

      • Only little over 8 hours to go! :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-15 2:48:17pm
        • lol Thanks for taking over my job there. ;o)) [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-15 2:51:06pm
          • Duo-baan!! :)) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-15 3:27:42pm
            • lol! If only we could get paid to do that! :P [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-15 3:30:49pm
    • I'm eager to see the results too, but then again, It's only fair this way. [R] - Yair - 2006-07-15 2:48:10pm
      • True [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-15 2:56:42pm

    • Great! Can we all have a piece while we read later on?! :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-15 6:42:43pm
      • Of course...i will even try to upload a photo of it so you could see how delicious it will be! [R] - orionas - 2006-07-15 6:44:45pm
        • Hurray!!! [R] - Frank - 2006-07-15 6:45:13pm
    • Big mistake, orionas! - Yair - 2006-07-15 8:53:05pm

Harrow, can't you spill a bit on the first semi voting?

all but 2 of the remaining 18 participants vted
10 non-participants voted, comprising one jury between them.

The last set of votes decided the 6th place qualifier, any one of 4 stood a chance on the last day of making it.

There were pretty much always a clear top 10, but it was tight throughout, with many songs exchanging places in the qualifying places and outside of them.

    That good enough? :)
