  • Semi 2 Draw up: there is a bit of sound... - Harrow - 2006-07-15 10:00:06pm
    • That was gross. :P - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-15 10:02:36pm

        One. :o))

        • Too little, too late! - Yair - 2006-07-15 10:05:30pm

And some of the song titles here are even more insane than the 1st semi!

          • :P [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-15 10:15:29pm
    • LMAO@the tearing and yelling!!! Interesting titles :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-15 10:05:04pm
    • Super excited about a Generacija 42 AL! Yayyy! [R] - anon - 2006-07-15 10:06:05pm
    • Ahh, still another hour to wait for the songs... *sigh* [R] - carly in lund - 2006-07-15 10:07:05pm
    • Any resemblance between Alla and existing Lobo's is purely coincidental!! :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-15 10:11:12pm

  • Go, go, wild guesses! - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-15 10:23:05pm

    *stomps on floor*

I could try, but I have no clue. :P I have an inkling about Je T'Adore though. :o))

Now about ALC, why isn't "Je t'adore" Belgium 2006 on the angel - chiara list?
Posted by Fulingen on 2006-07-15 11:35:26pm

What I can see, there are two entries based on that "song"...

nr 17, Pasema, in semi 1, and
nr 16, I'm a whore in semi 2?

  • Harrow didn't update the duplicate songs that arrived later. That page was only for warning purposes. [R] - Yair - 2006-07-15 11:37:51pm
    • Ok, sorry, didn't know that! =) [R] - Fulingen - 2006-07-15 11:39:03pm
    • Yep, indeed. Cos I wouldn't have been able to update til after the deadline had passed so it was completely pointless [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-15 11:41:36pm
  • Let's face it, she wasn't an angel, or a Chiara, so :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-15 11:43:46pm
    • LOL! But she sure felt like there were too many of her sometimes! >=) [R] - Fulingen - 2006-07-15 11:46:22pm

So... which semi do you think was strongest so far?

I think semi 1 was better, personally :)

  • I agree with you, semi one had better entries overall, I only like two entries in semi 2, vs 6 in semi 1. [R] - Fulingen - 2006-07-15 11:44:50pm
  • To be honest, I think - Frank - 2006-07-15 11:45:18pm

I'll have to read semi 2 first :))

    • Tsk, yu're so slow! I finished reading them weeks ago! ;) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-15 11:46:05pm
  • Really Really Gay is Really Really Good :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-16 12:15:57am

Sometime an entry comes by with a song I've never heard before and I just love it when I'm hooked on the first read

due to clever lyrics and perfect match of word and rhythm.

Bravo to whoever wrote Generacija 1642.

It's not funny as in haha's, but so well written. Kudos! :-)

  • Tsk - Yair - 2006-07-16 12:00:14am

You didn't want their CD when I offered. Fab song and fab album :)

    • Oh, I still hate the song in of itself, I just love what the writer did with it :-)) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-16 12:02:20am

  • I think it's cute :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-16 12:30:53am
    • The fact that Alex sits in a coffeeshop to read ALs? :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-16 12:37:08am
      • LOL! That too, yes :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-16 12:43:45am
      • what's so weird about that? - carly in lund - 2006-07-16 12:45:11am

And just like in the first semi, it's not the kind of song I ever thought I'd give 12 to.

  • The rest will be hard, but my 12 is an easy decision - Yair - 2006-07-16 12:56:42am
    • Hmmm, I find it rather hard this time - Frank - 2006-07-16 1:36:58am

The number of non fitting ones is higher, which is a blessing in disguise, as it narrows it down. But also annoying as some had good ideas.
      Decisions, decisions :))

      • My thoughts to a tee...some of the best ones have severe matching problems. To douze or not to douze :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-16 1:38:29am
        • That's the question :) - Frank - 2006-07-16 1:47:05am

Well, I know my answer. As I said, it's a pity, but a man's got to do what a man's got to do :)

          • A man's got to douze, what a man's got to douze :-) [R] - [PL] supporting AX-NL!!! still!! - 2006-07-16 1:51:55am
            • ROFL!! Well spoken! - Frank - 2006-07-16 1:55:25am

I think I'll need a new category for all these good idea ones that don't fit. There were some in semi 1 too and I'm sure there are more to come still.

              • So will I - the very few that actually fit - Yair - 2006-07-16 2:00:08am

are cliché, not understandable, or full of bla-bla.

My douze, however, is funny, witty AND fitty :))

                • I just came home from an evening meeting friends I hadn't seen in a looooong time - and now this to finish it off! Swell [R] - [PL] supporting AX-NL!!! still!! - 2006-07-16 2:04:03am

No such luck here so far, but there's a couple of horses that run ahead of the rest, even if some may have run before :)

                  • Yes...my fave has been mentioned (both theme and song) but it's sooo well written and funny :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-16 2:13:34am

ALC Semi 2 ...
Posted by Thomas No Sex! No Sports! on 2006-07-16 12:23:50pm

... no comment, otherwise Sild will strangle me with his tie - and deservedly so ;)

  • Imo Semi 1 was much better...I could actually see a song from Semi1 wining the whole thing. [R] - orionas - 2006-07-16 12:30:58pm
    • Absolutely! [R] - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-16 12:31:41pm
      • Yeah same here, the overall level was much higher in semi 1 and I agree with Orio!!!! :))) [R] - javi - 2006-07-16 12:33:30pm
  • I also think Semi 1 was better overall - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-16 12:34:16pm

Here it seems that the lyrics that fit the melody seem quite unoriginal and the ones that are original don't fit the melody at all... lol There are some exceptions though, which I will reward. ;o)

    • My feelings are the same - Yair @work - 2006-07-16 12:43:45pm

And this semi has exactly 6 songs that deserve to go to the final, and I bet they all will.

      • I hope I will spot them tonight! ;) [R] - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-16 12:44:20pm
      • You found that many? I didn't. :( - Timoteus - 2006-07-16 12:50:04pm

Though I only went through the first verse and chorus (or thereabouts) of each of them, didn't have 28 x 3 minutes available right now. I didn't yet even provisionally rank them and I have no idea which texts I end up voting for.

      • Well, I've went through all of them once, and... - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-16 12:53:06pm

I could already take off 15 I was certain I wouldn't vote for. Last week, I took off 8. :o))

But you know, better chances for moi. :o)))

        • You have an entry in this semi? :-) [R] - Timoteus - 2006-07-16 12:56:44pm
          • It's generally considered a worse field than the first one - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-16 1:25:35pm

*Of course* I have an entry! :P

            • Very diplomatic, yet funny answer :-)) LOL!!! [R] - [PL] supporting AX-NL!!! still!! - 2006-07-16 1:26:46pm

              • That's our AX!! :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-16 1:31:28pm
  • Semi 2 is miles better. - Jelena - 2006-07-16 12:37:12pm

Some dogs , of course and childish and insultive entries too, but overall , much better.
Healthy sense of humour prevails in Semi 2, and Semi 1 was horrible.

    • Horrible? It was almost as good as last year's final ... - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-16 12:43:30pm

... and there is hardly anything that works on both levels, lyrics and matching the melody, in semi 2.

      • All that can be erased by rudeness and insultive lyrics. - Jelena - 2006-07-16 12:46:25pm

Cant wait to see who wrote which entry, that will make the whole picture about some, im sure.

        • But that's not fair Jelena... - javi - 2006-07-16 12:54:45pm

ALC is about fun and no one was out to intentionally offend anyone, only to *try* to make us smile...One entry doesn't define a person, there's so much more to us than just that...

          • Couldn't have put it better... - orionas - 2006-07-16 1:04:59pm

When posting here for long you probably start to know the other people...An ALC entry shouldn't change your opinion about someone...

            • I agree! [R] - Frank - 2006-07-16 1:32:29pm
        • *Some* people are taking this slightly too seriously... - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-16 1:51:16pm

You don't know what or who is behind the entry and you could just as well have taken it the wrong way. I'd wait with judging people before you know what you're talking about. Are you also going to judge the people who have voted for those entries? They could be your best MB friends! Not only are you taking away a lot of fun for yourself, you're doing the same for others.

I thought some lyrics were really quite sick, mean, or whatever, but some people have that sense of humour and enjoy that. I'm not going to judge them and say my sense of humour is better or "healthier" as you put it. It's just a difference of opinion.

So let's just enjoy the contest, and don't let the people who have insulted you - without ever having the intention to do so, I'm absolutely 100% certain - ruin the fun for you or anyone else, okay? Cool. :o)

          • I agree, again :) - Frank - 2006-07-16 1:56:31pm

I think all entries were written with the best intentions and not to insult or anything. Some may use a different humour than others, but that's only normal. At the end of the day it's just an attempt to entertain and it doesn't say anything about the person behind it.

          • Well said. [R] - Yair @work - 2006-07-16 2:11:31pm
          • Oh how I agree with you!!!! Amen to all that. Very well put. [R] - javi - 2006-07-16 2:49:02pm

      • I agree... - Joanna - 2006-07-16 4:33:48pm

but still, it's really not the worst entry in semi 2.

I'm having trouble matching more than one AL with the music in this semi, I don't like that. Maybe it's just me though, but when it comes to one entry in particular I think it's impossible to get the AL to fit the music :(

        • No, that's not just you. - Frank - 2006-07-16 4:38:43pm

There's a substantial number that doesn't fit. Still, it makes voting easier :)

          • glad to hear that :) - Joanna - 2006-07-16 4:43:43pm

I think there is more than one case too, yeah, but with one AL in particular I really don't see what the person who wrote it was thinking. And no, it doesn't make the voting easier... because I actually like some of the songs with that "problem", a lot even. But now I don't know if I should give them anything at all...

            • I'm a simple person - Frank - 2006-07-16 4:49:46pm

A lyric should suit the song, an alternative lyric as well. :)

          • haha, that would be good (and I haven't forgotten about the banana milkshake! ;) - Joanna - 2006-07-16 5:27:27pm

I leave tomorrow evening, get there early on Tuesday morning. If everything goes according to plans, that is, flying with Austrian Airlines through Vienna again :)

            • Be safe Joanna!! - Jeremy - 2006-07-16 5:42:30pm

Troubled times there, so please stay away from Tiberias, and stay alert

              :-))

              • aww, thanks :) - Joanna - 2006-07-16 5:54:02pm

but I don't *always* go to Tiberias, you know (surprised you still remember that in the first place!), and I will probably be way down south (near Eilat) for at least half of my time there, so I should be okay. And I won't be too far up north the rest of the time either :)

my votes

...are being sent to Harrow soon. But I thought I'd share some semi 2 opinions I have. Maybe let Harrow have his fun trying to figure out which comment goes with which vote.

Of the songs that will receive votes from me:

* One is a perfect fit... except for one line. In a semi of many poor fits, it is worth noting that there are some exceptions. However, lack of difficulty lowers the point score.

* One was supposed to be funny, I guess, but it turned out to be more "enjoyable" than funny. Which is still a good thing. And of the many name dropping song, this is the one of the few whose droppings weren't brown and stinky.

* One took on an incredibly difficult song, and far surpassed every other song in the past 2 semis in the amount of quality per unit of difficulty. Difficulty aside, it wasn't the best fitting. On the other hand, the misfit was hardly noticeable, what with being distracted by sustained fits of laughter. Fit of laughter vs. fit to the original... hmmmmm.

* One was a good match with excellent rhyming. Only compromised by a bland topic and a couple of lines that were real stinkers. Of course, there were a few lines that were the complete opposite--definitely point-earning material.

* One mostly fits, but its lack of substance and inability to deliver the haha's belied its potential. Such a good title, too :(

* One got a points added for effort and a few deducted for the careless use of a rhyming dictionary and thesaurus.

* One was Effin brilliant! It is currently my pick to take it all, despite the lukewarm response to the semi so far. Credit needs to be given where credit is due. Someone with a good ear must have really spent their time getting a feel for this difficult song... and then they nailed it. Not only witty and clever, but executed with great technical merit. One odd thing I noticed is that some lines are easier to read than to sing along to ;) ... not sure that's a good thing. But I managed to avoid some of the uncomfortable misfits by not trying to sing along. It worked. Besides, I far prefer the ALC over the original song! Well done and good luck to whoever wrote it!

* The others getting points squeeked through, but not necessarily on merit. They were mostly harmless point-getters by default.

...finally, it ain't over till you get a few scathing comments. Here are random comments that I made as I listened to songs not commented on above.

"Doesn't really fit... and an off-putting topic. Not the worst."
"This is funny. Too bad ALC requires you to match those funny little lyrics to the original song. A poor waste of hillarious lyrics and a fun idea… alas, further doomed by the driving rhythm of the vocals in the original. Could have pulled this off with a meandering, shapeless ballad, I'm sure. Best to just make up your own tune for this one, as it's one of the poorest matching in the entire contest."
"One line fits. Well done. Now what about the rest?"
"I am confused. In the category of coherence, this takes second only to Ulysses. If you read the words backwards and mix the lines up randomly, it seems to make a bit more sense."
"No" / "Blah" / "Meh"
"I guess I need some help with this one. So I'll wait for the help to arrive and won't give it any points for now."
"I'm sure whoever wrote it thought it was funny. I hate to burst their bubble. Thank goodness for anonymity and shifty deidentified comments."
"Can't you be disqualified for having a 12 year old write your ALC entry for you?"
"Even *I* listened to the song while reading the entry--you'd think the author would have as well."
"So uninspired that it fails to inspire a scathing comment."

and not revealing at all IMO.

But to think Harrow is the only one "figuring out which comment goes with which vote" is a bit naive ;)

I am having trouble finding enough entries to vote for in this semi to be honest, but I doubt that will be the case in the final (I hope so anyway!), so I'll probably be voting (even though I am on holidays at the time) :)

      • I should clarify: Harrow won't get these comments matched to my actual votes. - rich - 2006-07-16 10:58:41pm

He gets to guess which points correspond to which comments, if he so desires ;)

ALC Semi 2...
Posted by Richard_CT on 2006-07-17 2:15:08am

Well, my "failsafe" scoring system failed badly this time. I got a six-way tie for first place. That said, none of these songs would even have scored 5 points in Semi 1.

Disappointing.

  • I have almost the same opinion - orionas - 2006-07-17 7:49:59am

With the difference that the song i'm giving the 12 points in semi 2 would probably get 6 points in Semi 1 and not 5 as you say.
It was difficult for me find a song to give 12 points and i had to really try to find one...But then again i think we were spoilt by Semi1 and that is why he have so high standards...
I don't know why but i have the feeling that Semi 3 is going to be better than Semi 2 by far...

ALC semi 2 - it get's better after a second and third reading, when I skip the horrible ones...
Posted by Fulingen on 2006-07-17 11:32:10am

After my first reading, I had 2 entries I liked, and only 5 i could vote for.
After the second reading, I liked 4 and had 8 to vote for.
Finally after a third reading, I found the last two who will receive my two lowest points.

IMHO the great entries in semi 2 are still a bit lower than the great ones in semi 1. But there is one entry here which I think could surprise a lot of people and end up in the final top three, unless we have some really brilliant entries left.

Oh, and to the author of "Total Plagiat", one perfect rhyme for ranking is spanking, which is what I would like to give to the authors of two other entries. Which other entries? That shall for now remain a mystery...

  • The highs and lows seems more extreme in this semi to me - Sild - 2006-07-17 11:38:15am

While the first one was filled with lots of ok-ish entries and few that stood out, but in this one there are more that really stands out - in both directions. Besides, the themes seem more varied in this one to me, so I had a more enjoyable time reading semi 2.

    • For me, the ones that stand out the most in semi 2 do so for being awful, not for being great, like in semi 1. [R] - Fulingen - 2006-07-17 11:52:21am
      • I think there's been a fair few awful ones in both and so far I've struggled to find 10 to vote for in both ..... - julie@work - 2006-07-17 11:56:02am

... but more so in this one I guess!

        • After my second reading of semi 1, I was up to 12 entries that I thought should receive points. - Fulingen - 2006-07-17 12:04:52pm

But I guess I'm a bit more like Frank and Yair on this one, I still feel that the new lyrics should fit the original music with ease, I can understand certain differences and minor flaws, but when there are too many of them, the whole entry loses it's meaning to me and not even a very clever and original idea can save it.

Before I sent my entries in, I was convinced that I would be this years "Estonian cowgirl" since my entries aren't that great IMHO, but after reading what other people have entered, I'm getting my hopes up, with a little luck I might even be in the top 10.

          • LOL, I am beginning to regret not completing my entries too! [R] - julie@work - 2006-07-17 12:08:10pm
          • Are you saying "Estonian Cowgirl" was not great?? :P - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-17 12:09:36pm

You're right, it was, as Maria would say, AMAHZING!! :o))

            • Great, but underrated! - Pete D - 2006-07-17 12:10:55pm

"Estonian Cowgirl" will be seen as the Ein Lied Kann Eine Brucke Sein of the ALC in years to come.

              • Oh you bet it will! ;o)) [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-17 12:18:09pm
            • I'm saying "Estonian Cowgirl"... - Fulingen - 2006-07-17 1:01:03pm

was an entry that had an original idea, it had effort and lots of love put into it, but still some flaws prevented it from getting the points it deserved.

And I am NOT only saying this because you were my "nr 1 fan" last year! =)

  • The author of "Total Plagiat" hadn't obviously read Yair's tips. Rhymezone would have given that and 12 other rhymes. [R] - Timoteus - 2006-07-17 11:41:10am
    • But the fun would have been lost, wouldn't it? ;o) [R] - Sild - 2006-07-17 11:42:36am
    • LOL, but I don't think they actually meant to find a rhyme! [R] - julie@work - 2006-07-17 11:42:40am
  • Interesting ... none of the entries and lines frequently mentioned in here impressed me that much. - Thomas - who will fish me? - 2006-07-17 3:45:39pm

My douze will most probably go elsewhere ... and there's another classic, hilarious ALC entry in that semi which seems to get overlooked, maybe because the song is, mildly speaking, not that popular ;). Or maybe it just lacks the perversion and provocative acting which seems to go down a storm this year, judging from some comments?

No criticism intended (certainly not, you will find out when my votes will be revealed), just some thoughts!

ALC: What does "fit" mean?
Posted by rich on 2006-07-17 4:40:40pm

It seems like most of the discussions of fit are about how well the alternate lyrics match the beat or melody of the music.

Does anyone take into account the match between the alternate lyrics and the original lyrics?

I haven't decided whether I think that this criterion should matter. This is because some original lyrics are poorly written with odd stresses or meter all over the place that can be improved on. Additionally, some singers have accents or stress certain words in a way that can ruin a perfectly good set of ALs.

How do the rest of you feel about the new lyrics matching the old lyrics/sung words?

  • I am not very strict - orionas - 2006-07-17 4:45:01pm

over this matter unless there is a major problem with the fitiing...if i just find one or 2 phrases that do not really fit i don't deduct points. I'm quite sure that the writer has found a way to fit them in a good way otherwise he/she wouldn't send them...If we could have an mp3 of the writer singing the AL then we could see how he/she stressed the word as to fit the melody...After all there are some songs that are really difficult to follow the melody and write lyrics.

sometimes a line is effective if it's completely different from the original, sometimes it's most effective if it's very similar, and sometimes if it's not similar for a while, but all of the sudden (at the most ironic point) it fits.

i can't express the index for this in words, it either works for me or it doesn't.

  • Hot or sexy? Well-built? In shape? - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-17 5:10:58pm

Oh in ALC? Sowwie, I slightly drifted off there! :P

It's subjective. I've heard someone say an entry was "hard to sing along to" while I spent DAYS, I mean... *someone* probably spent a lot of time trying to make it perfect and thinking to themselves that they succeeded!! :P

  • Well, depends...sometimes an extra syllable or one less is ok :-) - Jonas - 2006-07-17 5:15:28pm

I want to be able to sing the new lyrics, and I want to be able to sing them to the melody of the song, not change the melody according to the new lyrics. Sometimes the melody doesn\'t really change if you add an extra word or remove one, in that case it's no problem, but if the stresses and syllables of a line doesn't really match with the melody, then it doesn't work for me :)

An example. Carola sang "I know just whaaat I feel insiiiii-iiii--iii-iiiide"

That "siii-iii--iii-iiiide" could very well be replaced by three four instead of one, it wouldn't change the melody :) But it can't be replaced by FIVE words ;)

    • And btw, it's not out of "principle", but simply because I cannot enjoy a song that I cannot sing with the melody ;-) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-17 5:27:28pm

It's quite silly, cause I'll be 90 % wrong, but I'll make a little list of guesses so that at least I have posted *some* predictions once things are gonna be revealed ;)

I think "I want beans" is written by Thomas.

"Everything (The culinary mix)", immediatly makes me think of either Carly or Rich, or both together.

"Herz" could be Yair, but I'm not quite sure about that. So could the Brain-song be.

With "Mr.A" my guess would be...Lobo.

"The Tasty Moussaka" also makes me think it's Carly/Rich.. well, every food-ish song does.

"Pissadansen"... I think that is Alexander.

"Good Result (Big 4 Languages Megamix) " would be cool if it was Jukka, but it's not :) Could maybe be Harrow himself behind this.

"Hard Cock by Viagra" is by someone who really needs to get laid :)

"No Gay Impossible" is by euroUSA.

"Addicted to Glue"...hmm...Martin-DK.

"I Sue"... Roger... or Yair...

BTW, as studying the entries carefully now...it strikes me... Harrow, why have you given some different fonts than the others? trying to affect the outcome? ;)

And I also realised I better stop now, as I obviously have at elast one entry in the two first semis, and it could be easy for you to figure it out. (Maybe I should scroll back up in my message and add a "fake" guess for my own...)

Now, go on and laugh at how wrong I am :)

  • Well for starters, I haven't entered... - Harrow - 2006-07-17 9:22:10pm

Secondly, all of semi 1 look the same font to my untrained eyes, they are all meant to be Verdana, but some may accidentally be Comic Sans. No purposeness behind it :)

    • Yeah, but some entries are totally in bold, etc... [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-17 9:24:00pm
      • oh hold on - Addicted To Glue is blatantly Comic Sans, I'll check em all again... [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-17 9:25:11pm
        • yeah... and the bold/italics/regular thingie is also confusing ;-) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-17 9:25:56pm
          • there's no bold. Entries 1 and 2 of semi 2 were wrong font. Italics/Lack of are as submitted [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-17 9:29:36pm

  • I have the strong feeling that "I Sue" is written by... - Jortsu - 2006-07-17 9:26:35pm

Thomas (maybe he'll kill me for this, LOL).
I also thought "No Gay Impossible" was written by Alex. My guess about "Hertz" is Jeremy and I really don't think "Mr. A" is written by Lobo.
Anyway, I'm crap at guessing ALC's, I'm still not very much used to each other's styles ;)

    • I thought for Hertz... - [PL] supporting AX-NL!!! still!! - 2006-07-17 9:33:58pm

That Yair might have done it, but Jeremy is also a good possible guess...

      • Yair tends to rhyme words with the original words though, so I change my guess to Jeremy ;-) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-17 9:36:12pm
        • I change my guess too :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-17 9:39:56pm

    • I thought "Hertz" was by Frank to be honest! - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-17 9:40:27pm

I agree with Jonas on "Everything (The Culinary Remix)" but I think "The Tasty Moussaka" could have been Yair's.

      • And no idea about you, mate ;) - Jortsu - 2006-07-17 9:42:03pm

"Pissadansen"? Don't think so, though ;)

          • ;-) [R] - Jortsu - 2006-07-17 9:47:48pm
        • I'm sure Pissadansen is anyone but Alexander - Yair - 2006-07-17 9:44:40pm

Because he posted that cute "We should have killed Ovi Martin" a few weeks ago.

Surely he wouldn't write two songs for the same melody?

  • And something else - RogerF - 2006-07-17 9:30:13pm

Isn't "No Gay Impossible" just too obviously Alex to actually be written by Alex?

    • Could be, yes :) [R] - Jortsu - 2006-07-17 9:34:20pm

and that you connected me to that entry! :o)

I thought "Hard cock of Viagra" might be javi and "No gay impossible" Alex, but those are both quite obvious, so they might be exactly switched. :o))

I would *love* for "I Sue" to be Thomas. It'd be perfect. :o))

    • Javi was the first one i thought when i saw Hard cock from viagra - orionas - 2006-07-17 9:47:02pm

And Yair when i read Hertz and Mmmm Brains but Hertz also fits to Jeremy (He was perhaps my strongest guess for Hertz but i remember him saying that his entry hadn't been mentioned a lot in the Mb-he could be of course telling lies!!)

  • I think Frank wrote Llama, and Alexander wrote McCauls or Promotours [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-17 9:44:04pm

And LOL@some of what you guys said, by the way...

" Hertz" is most likely written by Jeremy

"I sue" sounds a lot like Thomas...

" Really really Gay"...I don't know...could this be Jeremy again??? Probably not...This will go straight into the rofl section...lol...

    " I'm no stickler"...Jonas?

    " Pissadansen"...Jonas again?

    "On again...Off again"...Paul?

" If we all pay for ticket" probably Marianne...

" Torero"...Luke, if he is in...

" No gay Impossible"...I don't think it was written by either Lobo, Jonas or Alex...

    " The tasty moussaka"...Orionas?

    " Hard Cock.." EuroUsa? :)))

" We can't live w/o neighbours" Yair, even though he's denying it...

New voting strategy for ALC from the NY jury
Posted by Jeremy on 2006-07-18 2:18:56pm

I've had so much fun learning new ESC songs I've never heard before through some of the ALC entries, so they automatically get an edge in point consideration, even if the lyrics are problematic (real stinkers will get dq'd of course).

So those who wrote lyrics to old/obscure songs that barely get mention anymore - bravo, thanks and me will reward thee. This policy will carry through to Semi 3 and the final.

:-)

  • Shame you didn't try that one last year!! ;-) [R] - Pete D - 2006-07-18 2:23:26pm
    • Hence "new" :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-18 2:24:07pm

When you decide to start writing an ALC entry...
Posted by orionas on 2006-07-18 2:36:14pm

do you start with songs you like, songs you don't like or songs that would be easy to write?

  • songs I think I can make a good hand at or suit my writing style :)) [R] - Niall@work! - 2006-07-18 2:46:33pm
  • hmmm...songs that I think could go well - javi - 2006-07-18 2:50:46pm

with the wording I have in mind, I don't care if I like the song or not...in fact this year my entries are based on songs that I don't really like much...

    • So there goes my prediciton for your writing "hard cock" [R] - orionas - 2006-07-18 2:53:19pm
  • I usually just have a bit of an idea that fits in with a song, whether I like it or not. That idea is always ingenious.. - Luke - 2006-07-18 2:56:07pm

...and I am invariably unable to turn it into a lyric for a whole song. A bit of genius (if a say so myself!) and a whole lot of total crap does not a great alc lyric make! I'm gratified to see that I am not the only person to suffer from this, but I don't submit my Frankenstein lyrics into the contest! This year I had a simple idea that for once would stretch to an entire lyric, but the downside is that it is far from being genius! :-)))

Tough fight for my douze between one entry which has never been mentioned and another one which seems extremely polarizing and has been really butchered by some - well, all I can say is, ALC is not just about being diligent and industrious, it's also about having a great idea.

And the new trend to reward entries which help to rediscover forgotten or more obscure ESC songs - don't count me in.

If there is a great lyric to an 06 song with chiara-angel warning, I will wholeheartedly shower it with points, if an obscure song comes with dull lyrics, no way.

  • I'm sure there'll be surprises :) - Jortsu - 2006-07-18 9:41:30pm

"Chernobyl" last year was not one of the most mentioned entries (though *I* did mention it) and it clearly won :)

  • Children, I'm done ... - Thomas ... No Sex! No Sports! - 2006-07-18 9:51:45pm

... my 12 will definitely go the provocative route, but my 10 will be totally mainstream ;).

Tight race on the next ranks, entries are difficult to compare.

One is silly, but works wonders when "performed" with the original song.

One is both beautiful and wise, but almost destroys itself through 2 totally inappropriate lines :(((

One is a great concept, but rather mis-matching in terms of lyrics / melody.

One is wild, uninhibited fun - almost too much for its own good.

One has a fabulous intro evoking an imagery to crave for but some flaws in between.

One is clever and weird, but not always up to what it initially promises.

The remaining points for something completely tasteless and rude, but I can't help it. And for something totally absurd - I'm not even sure it was meant to be, but so what ;)

So "Hertz" is attributed to a lot of "big names" - it's a fun one to speculate. Imho it's 100 % Frank school, but there are some bits & pieces in there which make me believe it comes from a talented pupil and not from the master himself. Wouldn't rule it out, though.

Even though it might be too obvious, I expect Jeremy behind one of the "Hard Rock Hallelujahs" - and certainly not behind the one from semi 2 ;)

As for Yair, he is difficult to spot so far - "Llama" is the closest, but I'm not 100 % convinced. He's most certainly not behind "Mmmm - Brain!" - hey, this guy is out there to have 3 songs in the final! And if he has written "Neighbours", I will go blind within a second ...

"Moja Geracija" would have been another Yair guess, but ... no. He would have done some lines differently, I'm sure.

"Total Plagiat" could be Geert (and not just due to the choice of the song).

A lot of speculation about Carly / Rich - no, I don't think they are behind "Everything (The culinary mix)" as it is more or less a rip off what they had done better. I expect them (and especially Carly) to be behind a different type of food song which takes the category to the next level. That one's got "What Kind Of Ban" quality, so I would not rule Yair out completely.

"No Gay Impossible" - another popular one to guess and no, I don't expect Alex to be behind it (he could have "Really Really Gay" in there, it's got that "parading" feel written all over it". Somehow I could imagine Alexander behind it (as he is more or less the only young and cute one not mentioned), but then again - he WOULD have mentioned himself ;)

Jonas should be easy to spot due to his unique style, but I'm not sure either. Could be "Stickler", could be "Pissadansen" (more so than Alexander - I hope he is not behind "Promotour" though, I guess "Pasema" might be another option ;).

Why not Marianne behind "Pissadansen", by the way? It's got that subdued charm...

Other guesses: I would not be surprised if "Sex In A Van" came from Aviad.

"A Song On Speed" might be Stefan (even though he had no time to participate) fishing for my douze. Did it work? Hell, we just exchanged nil points at BFC!

"Je t'adore" - someone mentioned Frank and I would not rule that out completely. It is most definitely a person I worship and adore ;)

"Brokeback Twist" is a difficult one - I thought of Niall, he is a novice and his style is difficult to judge. But he loves the movie at least as much as I do, and I don't think the author does.

So a lot of you think I've written "I Sue"? You really believe I would spend my time with such a rotten song? You do?

Well, you might be right ... but on the other hand my generosity to those who are fishing for my douze is well known. Just a thought ;)

Funnily enough another entry I would have expected to be strongly associated with me was not mentioned at all - at least not in context with my name ;). But I was more than pleased with the name it got linked to ...

However, a couple of comments (not hints or spoilers)

    1) Both Pie and Bagel from '05 were Carly/Rich *collaborations* -- are there any Carly/Rich collaborations this year? Who knows.
    2) There was also this little thing called Such Attire that didn't do so poorly last year. And it wasn't about food ;) Honestly, there's more to us than food. For instance, we like beer. And cheese. And--oh god!!
    3) Both Carly and I had opportunities to be direct finalists. So who's to say either of us has entries in the semis?

    Food for thought :P

i thought it was fun only in the first verse and the chorus but after i kept reading the same thing over and over again i started getting bored and the second reading made things worse. I guess it's a matter of taste...

Fab ALC Semi II quotes

And as a team they'll join the game
Someone for the Belgians to blame

But he had a secret with Ol' Gay Paul:
Didn't fancy Fanny, or fannies at all...

Danny thrown off his horse.
"I've chipped a nail!" she heard him wail,
She wanted a divorce.

My hair is dyed
And I look really scared
Done 6 rehearsals but I’m far from prepared
-------------------------------------
Oh dear llama, out in the pasture
Lookin’ so cool, clearly the paddock’s master
I feel something, like sent from above
You’ve got me thinking, ‘bout cross-species love
------------------------------------
Don't want you to make the viewers faint
Don't need you to turn us all insane
You should know you ain't no f*cking stars and you're this far
only cos the Irish are quite bizarre

No new countries, no Baltic-fest
No Moscow, no Bucharest!
They brought us hatred,
And what was sacred
They took to Tallin, to Kiev
What's next? Yerevan?!?!

Just like Leandros can no longer sing
I'm feeling that way some times

Posted by [PL] supporting AX-NL!!!! on 2006-07-20 11:47:15pm

A lot of fits, but also a lot of repetition.
And because of the repetition the originality wears a bit off. Still there are worse entries in this semi...

====

Aaaah... Well, gimmicky. But it fits, it's original and daring.
Downside (though not visible here in the lyrics) is the repetition :-)
But that's a flaw that was already there in the original :-)

====

The effort alone in daring to tackle this should be rewarded. A bit surreal, fun.

====

Somehow this is a bit last year's ALC. Still harmless, cheeky fun. The writer radiates self-confidence and I can appreciate this somehow.
There are a lot of simillies (Alternative lyrics who sound similar to the original lyric, whatever the language may be). So extra points for that.
For me the best one so far.

====

Very little alternative in this lyric.
The writer just "stuck" to most of the original lyrics, and instead just changed some words and sentences.
Now one could argue that it's better to "stick" with something good, than exchange it for something less striking. However, this is what the contest is about: a little hurdle, a bit difficult, but no-one is obliged to pick this particular song.
Points are solely for originality of the subject.

====

Because of the choice of the song this gets a very different dimension. It adds to the atmosphere it's creating through the lyrics.

  • Confusing! - Frank - 2006-07-20 11:52:30pm

    Interesting and confusing :))

  • I'll just say that... - Jortsu - 2006-07-21 12:00:17am

The songs I enjoyed most singing were on Semi 1 ;)

21!! And some useless statistics
Posted by Frank on 2006-07-22 1:02:01am

There were 15 songs from 2006,
two songs from 2005, 2002 and 2000
and one song from 2003, 1996, 1994, 1983, 1982, 1975 and 1974 each.

Adjusting my final ALC Semi 2 ranking in a hangover it struck me: what happened to 'less is more'?
Posted by Timoteus on 2006-07-22 7:48:48am

There are surprisingly many texts in this semi which are basically well written and have an idea too but the structure of the original version is completely omitted. Why change the chorus (and/or the bridge) to something completely different every time it comes along? Hits aren't done that way. A little repetition isn't something to be avoided, quite the opposite, actually. Constantly changing lyrics lack coherence and catchiness.

I had to check last year's top 10 to remind myself if there was something similar there but nope, not really. "Such Attire" changed the chorus but kept the first half of it the same all the way through. "Ruslana" had some changes too as well as "Pie" due to the plot but the texts were still coherent. "My Unbearable Scream" is an exception but it's built differently and cleverly. The verses build the plot, the choruses are a list of actions (excl. the last one after the scream).

Ah, well, just had to moan about something. :o) It's just that when a song that *really* sucks is covered by a text less coherent than the original, it's unbearable, even more so in a hangover. I had a more or less fixed top 6 already and about eight songs battling for the last four scoring positions. I think they will go to the least irritating texts now.

BTW, at least one text with little repetition covering a song that sucks will get at least a decent amount of points from me so don't you think you can deduce too much about my votes. :-P

  • But perverse repetition in pop songs isn't necessarily a good thing - rich - 2006-07-22 8:28:20am

Exhibit A: Children's songs. Catchy, singable. Good?

    • Extremes are hardly ever a good thing. I still just can't help but notice... - Timoteus - 2006-07-22 8:51:48am

...that usually my faves are the texts which keep the original structure. I don't make such a choice knowingly, I just fail to find the hook in a prosaic story if the musical structure is that of a typical pop song. The authors, however, do make a choice. There are more than a thousand songs to choose from, no one is forced to choose one with perverse repetition.

      • If the replaced lyrics are good, then repetition is nice, however, if they're only so-so - [PL] supporting AX-NL!!! still!! - 2006-07-22 9:02:39am

And half of your songs contains this refrain which is repeated, then half of your song becomes so-so.

        • Yes, that's true. I can't see how multiple choruses help though. - Timoteus - 2006-07-22 9:08:14am

After all, writing several different sets of lyrics to the chorus needs more effort, so it's kind of unlikely for them to be any better. It would probably be better to make that effort in writing one good chorus than several so-so choruses.

And that's exactly what's beyond me. Why on earth do people work more on their entries to make them worse? %-|

          • Very good point... - javi - 2006-07-22 9:13:21am

Could it be that competition is so fierce that people would do anything to try to make their entry stand out?

Anyway, not my case though, I'm not in this to win...only to have fun :)))

            • Very healthy attitude Javi! - orionas - 2006-07-22 9:16:51am

The same goes for me...I'm in ALC for the fun of it! Not that it would be bad if i manage to be in the final...However the important thing for me is that i had fun writing lyrics for ALC and it was fun seeing people's reaction to my writing!

              • Well yeah... - javi - 2006-07-22 9:25:39am

I know I'm not gonna make the final since I've seen what I'm up against...but I did my best and had fun doing it...so all's good!

  • Well... - javi - 2006-07-22 8:56:46am

I'm hungover too, so I'll agree with you...to a certain extent. What you said may be true, unless that repetition gets really annoying. And I for one don't care much if the original song sucks ( if that's what you meant) if the AL are well written...

And you haven't voted yet? Gee, you people take your time, eh? :))

    • It's problematic if the original song is unbearable to listen to... - Timoteus - 2006-07-22 9:02:37am

...because I have to listen to it - a few times - to know how good the AL is. It's difficult to give the AL a fair chance in that case. AL's on songs that suck do get votes from me if they are good but there's a chance they get less of them than they'd deserve to.

      • Oh sh*t and you say that now? :))) Kidding... - javi - 2006-07-22 9:09:17am

Honestly, I don't care that much. As much I can hate a song, if the AL are good, they are bound to get points from me...Yes, it may be painful to listen to, but it's worth it for what you get in return....

        • Hey, it's in Yair's tips! Don't blame me if you didn't read them! :-P ;) [R] - Timoteus - 2006-07-22 9:10:29am
          • LOL!!!!! :-P [R] - javi - 2006-07-22 9:14:04am
      • The opposite is also true: Me for instance if I like a song especially much, a nice ALC could get it higher points :-) [R] - [PL] supporting AX-NL!!! still!! - 2006-07-22 9:17:03am
        • Well ok... - javi - 2006-07-22 9:24:08am

Hardly fair for the songs you dislike, but as long as you judge them all equally...It's just that it sounds that just because you like one of the original songs very much, it's bound to get more points if the AL are good than the one you dislike...not very fair, is it?

          • It's a game of tastes anyway - so fair is only what the final result will be... [R] - [PL] supporting AX-NL!!! still!! - 2006-07-22 9:33:17am
  • I don't really agree :-) I like it when the whole song becomes like a "story"... - Jonas - 2006-07-22 9:53:02am

Normally repetition is good (to a certain extent) but in ALC it sometimes works better not to repeat too many times. Cause when you've read the same chorus twice, reading it again might not be as hilarious as it was the first time... while songs that have surprises and new things even towards the end makes me wanna keep reading/singing along uintil the song is over :)

But it's very different from song to song. Sometimes sticking to the same chorus is better, sometimes not.

  • Well, here's what I have to say... - Richard_CT - 2006-07-22 10:03:19pm

... if an ALC entry repeats the original format with no changes, it's boring.

Time to "think outside the box"?
