Semi 3

Sorry, I left it too late and loads of this had dropped of the MB :(

A little later than normal - ALC votes have been sent and there were 13!! 0's!
Posted by Niall@work! on 2006-07-27 5:52:36am

but there were also 3 FAAAB songs and all three could do very well in the final ;o)

it was very tough to decide who to give the douze to; and I can see those two doing extremely well in the final too...

  • OK, and not only to please Alex... i started to love "Moja Stikla" after reading the ALs - LoboinMadrid - 2006-07-27 2:02:51pm
    • Same happened for me, but with Solo :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-27 2:19:03pm

    • Both MS AL's are fab imo [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-27 3:03:03pm
      • I don't think I agree. [R] - Frank - 2006-07-27 3:06:32pm
        • Neither do I. [R] - Timoteus - 2006-07-27 4:07:24pm
        • i agree with you. Mucky Puppy is brilliant, the other one is just blah :-) [R] - euroUSA hearts KYLIE - 2006-07-27 4:16:58pm

      • Agree. [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-27 4:53:52pm
Aargh! Too much pressure! - Nick D. - 2006-07-27 7:48:01pm

Actually, I thought I was going to struggle to find anything wonderful in semi 3, but I've found a run of three straight 10s. And I think that one of those three is the outstanding entry of the semifinals and could just win the whole thing...

  • Oh. A new guessing game! - RogerF - 2006-07-27 8:12:32pm

Which is Nick's run of three? My guess is songs 19-20-21. :-)

  • What is your favourite ALC entry about having sex with Maltese cyclists on a hot day (to a 1950s ESC song)? - Yair - 2006-07-27 10:12:18pm
    • Refraine [R] - Frank - 2006-07-27 10:14:04pm
    • Give me half an hour on this one... :-) [R] - Nick D. - 2006-07-27 10:14:29pm
      • It's this one. - Nick D. - 2006-07-27 10:25:08pm

        Shag, shag, shag little cyclists
        Shag, shag, shag it!

        There's a bike on a road
There's a road on an isle
There's an isle in the Med and it goes on for fricking miles!

Near that bike on a road
Near that road on an isle
There's a couple that's naked except for beaming smiles

Shag little cyclists, have your fun
Shag there in the Maltese sun
Shag little cyclists all day long
        Sing your shaggy song!

        There's a bike on a road
There's a road on an isle
Where two bodies are forming a somewhat unsightly pile

Near that bike on a road
Near that road on an isle
There is gonna be a public indecency trial

Shag little cyclists, have your fun
Shag there in the Maltese sun
Shag little cyclists all day long
        Sing your shaggy song!

When the case comes to court and they're under escort
And the trial is adjourned pending psychiatric reports
They'll still think of those bikes on a road on an isle
And they'll still both be wearing those beatific smiles

Shag little cyclists, have your fun
Shag there in the Maltese sun
Shag little cyclists all day long
        Sing your shaggy song!

Shag little cyclists, have your fun
Shag there in the Maltese sun
Shag little cyclists all day long
        Sing your shaggy song!

        • ROFL!!!! [R] - Frank - 2006-07-27 10:28:14pm
          • 12 minutes and 50 seconds after Yair's post! :-D [R] - Nick D. - 2006-07-27 10:30:42pm
            • So quick, in fact, that we can't even accuse you of having too much time on your hands! [R] - Richard_CT - 2006-07-27 10:33:48pm
              • It was a miracle that everything worked first time on this one... - Nick D. - 2006-07-27 10:50:36pm

...the Med/meadow connection was pure dumb luck - I didn't have that in mind when I wrote it.

...the "psychiatric reports" line needed a bit of a run-up.

Everything else completely fell into place from the constraints Yair put on it. I was about to start work on Een Beetje, spotted UK '59 in the 1959 folder (because I'm organised like that), the title popped into my head and then it was like I was more or less typing up something that had already been written.

Nice feeling... it's usually *far* more of a struggle than that.

    • I shouldn't reveal the finalists before the schedule says to :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-27 10:14:39pm
    • "Follare", to Volare (Italy 58) [R] - LoboinMadrid - 2006-07-27 10:16:06pm
    • The one that I'm going to write for next year's ALC, now that - Richard_CT - 2006-07-27 10:17:01pm

you've put the idea in my head.

      • But not Follare or Refraine, these are already taken! [R] - Yair - 2006-07-27 10:19:13pm
        • Hot bike and Maltese fuck (Ger 56?) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-27 10:20:17pm
          • LOLOL!! [R] - Yair - 2006-07-27 10:22:16pm
          • Well, it sure isn't Le plus beau jour de ma vie!! :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-27 10:24:15pm
      • Oh, we'll know who'll have written "Hello Boy" then :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-27 10:19:53pm
        • Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of "Amours Maltes." [R] - Richard_CT - 2006-07-27 10:22:32pm
          • I would go for "Le temps perdu" :)) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-27 10:25:01pm
            • Mmmm... is sex with a Maltese cyclist lost time? - Richard_CT - 2006-07-27 10:37:34pm

Maybe I can write a song about how having sex with a Maltese cyclist took away time that could have been better spent writing a song about Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.

But don't hold your breath for that.

              • Have you seen Fabrizio? Why do you think I came up with Refraine in the first place? :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-27 10:38:50pm
                • It took me a few minutes, but I got it eventually! [R] - Richard_CT - 2006-07-27 10:39:56pm
  • I cannot wait for the ALC final. It will the highlight of my week :) - Josef - 2006-07-28 5:05:31pm
    • Should be fun indeed :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-28 5:06:29pm
      • Which semi do you think was best? For me was number two I guess :) [R] - Josef - 2006-07-28 5:07:26pm
        • First....but I found some true gems in all 3 :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-28 5:09:13pm
          • Me too! I just hope the automatic finalists deserve to be there! :)) [R] - Josef - 2006-07-28 5:10:12pm
            • Of course they do! Tsk!!! :)) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-28 5:13:14pm
              • hihi :))) [R] - Josef - 2006-07-28 5:14:16pm
          • I am sure I will find favourite in final also :) [R] - Josef - 2006-07-28 5:12:43pm
        • For me number one - but as Jeremy says true gems in each semi! [R] - David in Hull - 2006-07-28 5:26:37pm
    • Well, ALC final is getting very close - orionas - 2006-07-28 5:28:05pm

and the revalation of the songs that made it to the final is even closer! Less than 24 hours!

      • Yes, and I just noticed that I'm gonna miss the revelation shows :( [R] - Frank - 2006-07-28 5:29:41pm
        • Really? That's too bad. But i guess you'll catch up with the rest of us somehow! [R] - orionas - 2006-07-28 5:43:25pm
          • I'll have to watch it on sunday and bite my nails a bit longer :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-28 5:48:22pm
            • Tsk! Make sure you watch the shows before visiting the MB then :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-28 5:56:29pm
              • I'll try :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-28 6:00:12pm
    • Oh, yeah, I should probably vote....hehe [R] - carly in lund - 2006-07-28 5:42:30pm
    • Will you read all of them tomorrow in order, or skip the semifinalists and read the 9-10 new entries? - Yair - 2006-07-28 5:55:33pm

Reading them all in order would be the fairest, but I'll probably be too curious tomorrow (that and pushed by the late hour) to read just the new 9 first.

      • I'm sure I'll read the finalists first! - RogerF - 2006-07-28 6:06:19pm

I think it is actually fairer. Reading them a few times and rating them before comparing them to the qualifiers allows them to "catch up" in the familiarity stakes.

Maybe next year the finalists could be published a couple of days before the semi qualifiers are announced.

        • The only reason for having automatic qualifiers is for something 'new' to be revealed in the final - Harrow - 2006-07-28 6:12:43pm

releasing them earlier means we may as well just abolish automatic qualifiers completely :)

          • Oh, I thought the reason - RogerF - 2006-07-28 6:18:51pm

was to reward people who achieve the dizzy heights of 18th the previous year ;)

            • :) That's why the rules have been changed this year. Only writers who have an entry finishing in the top 10 qualify :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-28 6:21:27pm
              • Theoretically, there could be as little as 4 somethings new in the final then?:) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-28 6:26:52pm
                • yep :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-28 6:31:36pm
                  • and more or longer semis? :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-28 6:35:43pm
                    • more :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-28 6:37:38pm
                      • so ALC will be longer? :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-28 6:41:28pm
                        • depends on the decision of our 2006 winner :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-28 6:44:19pm
                          • If there's more semis, it's longer by default :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-28 6:47:56pm
                            • Not really :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-28 6:54:30pm
                              • Four is more than three! Even if you apply Weirdoman's uncertainty principles :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-28 6:57:50pm
                                • But if the time is reduced, ALC can have more semis but be shorter :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-28 7:04:07pm
                                  • If the time is reduced, but there aren't more semis, it'll be even shorter :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-28 7:12:49pm
                    • I don't think we'll see such a big difference in numbers from 2006 to 2007. Of course i could be wrong!

                • Wow, that would be so disappointing! [R] - Richard_CT - 2006-07-28 6:41:40pm
          • It also means 31-32 songs in each semi! *shudders* [R] - Yair - 2006-07-28 6:24:18pm

A confession to make about ALC
Posted by Pascalis on 2006-07-29 12:00:08pm

Now that the semis are over I have to confess that this was my first attempt in ALC. I believe that this year the level of the contest is very high and I will be very happy if my entry enters the TOP15 in the semifinal that takes part.

Good luck to all the participants. :)

See you in the final. LOL

  • Good luck to you too. :o) - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-29 12:05:46pm

I'm not counting on anything, but I'm still superexcited and curious to see where I ended... well, and to see if I got more than 2 points. ;o)))

  • The same goes for me. First time in ALC - orionas - 2006-07-29 12:08:00pm

and i found some really good entries and some i would love to have written (i would love to be able one day to write AL like those). But i also found some not so good entries so i have some hopes that i could reach the final. We'll see in a few hours.

  • Same here ;) - Geert - 2006-07-29 12:09:08pm

I hope I won't be last in *every* semi! :)

    • So you have 3 entries in ALC? [R] - orionas - 2006-07-29 12:10:20pm
      • WHo knows? Only Harro and I ;) - Geert - 2006-07-29 12:12:55pm

I didn't put a lot of effort in it, I have to add though. Only in the one I had submitted last year, but then had to withdraw because I went to work in Turkey for a whole month :)
